What is Bowls?

Lawn bowls is a sport in which players roll biased balls, called bowls, on a lawn or synthetic with the aim of getting them as close as possible to a smaller target ball called the jack. The game is typically played on a carefully maintained, flat, grassy or synthetic surface known as a bowling green.

How to Play Lawn Bowls:

  • Players or teams take turns rolling their bowls from a mat toward the jack.

  • The bowls are biased, meaning they curve in a predictable direction, which players use strategically.

  • The objective is to have your bowls closer to the jack than your opponents’ bowls.

  • Players can also try to knock away or move opponents’ bowls to improve their position.

  • Games are often played over a set number of ends (similar to innings), and points are scored based on the number of bowls nearer the jack than the opponent’s closest bowl.

Levels of Bowls:

  • Club Level: Casual and recreational play at local clubs.

  • Competitive/Intermediate Level: Serious players competing in local, regional, or national competitions.

  • Elite/Professional Level: Top-tier players who compete internationally and in major championships.

  • Para Bowls: Adapted versions for players with disabilities.
